Club Members

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America's premier youth recognition program for Club members. All members can benefit from participation in this program, which promotes and celebrates service to Club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals, and poise and public speaking ability.

Power Hour: Making Minutes Count provides Club professionals with strategies, activities, resources and information to create an engaging homework help and tutoring program that encourages Club members ages 7-12 and 13-18 to become self-directed learners.

Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among Club members ages 13-18 by building their basic money management skills. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. They also learn about starting small businesses and paying for college.

Career Launch encourages Club members ages 11-18 to assess their skills and interests, explore careers, make sound educational decisions and prepare to join our nation's ever-changing work force.

SMART Moves is a nationally acclaimed comprehensive prevention program that helps young people resist alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity. The program features engaging, interactive small group activities designed to increase participants' peer support, enhance their life skills, build their resiliency and strengthen their leadership skills. This year-round program encourages collaborations among Club staff, youth, parents and representatives from other community organizations.

My.Future (My Dot Future) - *Essentials: A project-based digital literacy program delivered through BGCA’s My.Future platform. Essentials are engaging and exciting project experiences that provide members of all ability levels with a foundation of technology skills that explore three central themes: The first – computing:  which includes building, exploring and communicating. Staff can tailor their members’ experiences by selecting from over 40 activities designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Each activity takes about 45 minutes to complete, although some may require more time depending on the members’ interest and passion levels. The others are music and video/film: which will allow staff to assist members in creating and editing their own songs, photos, and short films.

ALL STARS is an organized league sport and fitness program for Flag Football, Basketball and Step and Dance teams for youth ages 6-18. ALL STARS is funded by Buffalo Wild Wings and aims to increase opportunities for physical activity, social interaction and recognition through organized sports programming for youth. 

littleBits (Partnership w/ Children’s Museum of Illinois Decatur, IL) - Members are visited at the Club by Museum staff in order to make technology kits that are fun, easy-to-use, and infinitely creative. The kits are composed of electronic building blocks that are color-coded, magnetic, and make complex technology simple and fun. Together they’re interchangeable in millions of different ways to empower kids to invent anything - from a sibling alarm, to a wireless robot, to a digital instrument.

Street SMART counteracts the negative lures of gangs, violence and "street" influences on young adolescents ages 11-13. While building awareness and resistance skills, participants develop the confidence and knowledge to make intelligent choices. Street SMART’s three modules teach young people how gangs work and how to resist being recruited, how to recognize and resolve conflicts peacefully and how to become positive peer helpers. Participants reinforce what they have learned and share it with others by organizing community events that promote the positive messages of Street SMART.

Triple Play is a national program that takes a holistic approach to educating boys and girls about good nutrition, making physical fitness a daily practice and developing individual strengths and good character. In addition to components for the mind and body, the Triple Play program gets at the soul of the Club experience – the games room. Each mind, body and soul program component can stand alone; yet integrating them allows Club members to reap more powerful, lifelong benefits.

Girl Scouts of the USA is an organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

Junior Staff - An easy-to-use program for Club teens ages 13 to 18. This program will provide your Club staff and volunteers with tools to guide young people in preparing for a career in Boys & Girls Clubs and/or other service professions. Through participation in Junior Staff, teens will develop interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic and a sense of community engagement while experiencing on-the-job Club work. Areas include: front desk, BGC store, and help with daily activities.

Illinois Junior Chefs is University of Illinois Extension’s new cooking school curriculum for youth ages 8-13. Teen teachers from Illinois 4-H and staff members with the Illinois Nutrition Education Programs work together to provide a fun, engaging program that allows youth to learn about nutrition, try new healthful recipes, and gain new kitchen skills. Ten hours of classes are offered during summer cooking schools, typically five lessons for two hours each. Physical activity is also encouraged during classes to aid in promoting an overall healthy lifestyle.
